In 2021, the number of China’s university graduates will exceed 9 million. In order to relieve the employment pressure of graduates, SEM held a lecture on “How to Improve Job Hunting Success Rate? Resume Making & Interview Preparation” at 7:00 pm on June 16. The lecture was given by Zhang Xiaojia, the career counselor of SEM, and all 2022 undergraduate graduates of the school attended the lecture.
Zhang first introduced channels to find job information, and reminded everyone that “quantitative change leads to qualitative change”, so it is necessary to invest more than 100 resumes to find the job.
Next, she provided several suggestions for making resume. The resume should be adjusted to closely match the specific job. Also, students need to outline important and relevant experience first, highlight the key points and include adequate information. She briefly introduced the sections of basic information, working intention, working experience and awards, emphasizing that the experiences needs to be arranged in accordance with the needs of the position and the degree of importance, with the learning experience as an exception (in reverse order). Specific numbers are important to show their contributions. In response to students’ question on whether it is necessary to include a self-evaluation, Zhang suggested that it is a quite subjective part, and needs to be illustrated in a more objective way by using “general words + simple examples”.
In the third part of the lecture, Miss Zhang introduced channels and key points of resume submission. She pointed out that for online application, students need to prepare the information in advance and make a good record of their applications. When it is mailbox delivery, they need to pay attention to the naming of resume, confirm the e-mail address carefully and attach the letter of introduction.
In the fourth part of the lecture, Miss Zhang shared some experience in interview preparation. The interviewers normally care for three questions, “who are you? “Why are you here?” and “what can you do for me?”. Students should prove to the interviewer that they can do the job through six steps, such as “referring to enough relevant experience” and “summarizing personal strengths and characteristics”. After that, Miss Zhang showed students common interview questions like “introduce personal strengths and weaknesses” and “expected salary”, reminding them to prepare and adjust expectations according to the job requirements. Given the last question in an interview, “do you have anything you want to ask?”, she listed several wrong answers and suggested that they should ask questions related to career planning.
Miss Zhang gave her all to help 2022 graduates get prepared and locate a job in the coming employment season with skills of resume making and interviewing. At the end of the lecture, she wished everyone get whatever they wished for, and welcomed them to consult employment-related information at any time.
