Since the beginning of 2019, the junior party branch of undergraduate students in SEM has joined hands with Beijing Children’s Hospital to carry out “Red 1+1” branch building activities. The school organized student party members to go to Beijing Children’s Hospital and Baoding Children’s Hospital to do some volunteer services with the theme of guiding patients and ward escort. This year, due to the pandemic, junior party branch of undergraduate students changed the “Red 1+1” activities from offline to online, targeting children with malignant solid tumors in the hospital. They launched a weekly program called “Little Shell Storytelling”. The program is to tell vivid and interesting historical stories, fables to children. They hope to convey warmness to children with their voice, nourish them with stories, and accompany their growth with love.
Up till now, the “Little Shell Storytelling” program has been launched for three times, including the introduction of the traditional Tianjin cuisine, the origin of a place called Niujiaotuo in Chongqing, and the interesting fable from Hebei Province called Learn to walk in Handan. Each story was created by students themselves and the themes were closely related to their hometowns. Students told growing stories, history stories, and Chinese stories in a lively and interesting way to the children, with thought-provoking questions and practical gifts at the end of each story. The activities have brought vigor and interest to children’s hospital life and have helped them broaden horizons, increase knowledge and stay positive in their life.
Since the launching of the activity, it has received positive response, wide participation and is highly recognized by the hospital, the children, and their parents as well as student party members. Director of hospital volunteer service said that the storytelling program brought by the volunteers of USTB was very popular among children. It was a successful attempt and innovation of carrying out online volunteer service. A little boy and his parents send a message to the volunteers, saying that the sister (a student party member of SEM) has a very nice voice and he liked the stories and gifts very much. The student party members said what they’ve done is meaningful and they are proud that they can help the children. Some of other members signed up to participate in it after they learned about it.
SEM has always attached importance to the education and training of student party members and has actively responded to the Talents Cultivation Program and Pioneer Leading Program of USTB, guiding student party members to develop excellent skills and good virtue by serving people and the society. Last year, SEM established a red volunteer service base in Baoding Hospital of Beijing Hospital and carried out “Red 1+1” co-construction activities. It has organized more than 40 trips to children’s hospitals, carried out more than 20 activities, and more than 100 student party members participated in the activities. They have helped more than 10,000 patients, accompanied seriously ill (malignant solid tumors) children, and won the third prize of “Red 1+1” in Beijing.
