2027 Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Program Introduction School of Economics and Management, University of Science and Technology Beijing
The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) is a professional degree established by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to meet the urgent demand for engineering management professionals in the development of China’s modern engineering sector, improve the engineering management talent training system, innovate the training model for engineering management professionals, and enhance the quality of engineering management talent in China. In accordance with the Notice of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education on Adjusting Engineering Professional Degree Categories (Degree [2018] No. 7), the three fields of Project Management, Industrial Engineering, and Logistics Engineering, originally under the Master of Engineering professional degree category, were adjusted into the Master of Engineering Management professional degree category. Since 2020, enrollment, training, and degree conferral have been conducted under the adjusted professional degree categories.
Approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, USTB was authorized to confer the Master of Engineering professional degree in Industrial Engineering in 1999 and in Project Management in 2005. The program will enroll students in the following fields: Engineering Management (125601) and Industrial Engineering and Management (125603) in 2027.
The program is dedicated to cultivating high-level, application-oriented professionals who systematically master the basic principles of Marxism and the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, possess sound political integrity and professional ethics, acquire systematic knowledge of engineering management and industrial engineering theories as well as specialized knowledge in related engineering fields, have strong abilities in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and decision-making, and are able to independently undertake engineering management, production or service system planning, design, and management tasks.
1. A Systematic Training System
To meet the urgent demand for senior engineering management professionals in modern China, the program leverages USTB’s engineering background and the advantageous disciplinary strengths of the School of Economics and Management. The program offers specialized elective courses in three areas—Project Management, Modern Industrial Engineering and Lean Management, and Big Data and Business Analytics—aiming to cultivate innovative professionals with a multidisciplinary knowledge base.
Courses in the Project Management area aim to cultivate outstanding senior project managers. Through systematic study of project management theories and methods, students are able to independently lead project initiation, planning, organizing, execution, control, and closure activities, ensuring that projects are completed on time, to quality standards, and at reasonable cost.
Courses in the Modern Industrial Engineering and Lean Management area aim to cultivate innovative industrial engineers. Through systematic study of operations research, information technology, and modern management theories, students develop the comprehensive ability to design and optimize integrated production systems, supporting manufacturing enterprises in reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Courses in the Big Data and Business Analytics area aim to cultivate application-oriented big data analytics engineers. Students are expected to systematically master the theoretical knowledge of big data analytics and the operational skills of relevant software, enabling them to use modern big data analytics methods for production demand forecasting, resource scheduling optimization, and refined cost management.
2. Extensive International Cooperation
The School of Economics and Management at USTB has a long history of international cooperation in education. It has established broad academic and professional connections with institutions around the world and has signed multiple international exchange agreements.
Using international accreditation as a key driver, the School has fully aligned itself with international standards in faculty recruitment, disciplinary development, and teaching methods. It actively explores new pathways for cultivating innovative talent, conducts exchanges and cooperation with world-class business schools, and strives to improve education quality and the level of internationalization. Against this backdrop, the MEM program is committed to cultivating high-level, innovative engineering management professionals with an international perspective. It periodically invites international scholars and industry experts to deliver lectures and provides international exchange opportunities, thereby broadening students’ global horizons and enhancing their international competitiveness.
3. A Training Model Emphasizing Practice and Innovation
The USTB MEM program adopts a training model that places equal emphasis on theoretical learning and social practice/innovation, with the goal of cultivating students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge creatively in real engineering management practice. To this end, the program has established a joint mentoring model combining on-campus academic advisors and off-campus industry mentors. The School has built partnerships with dozens of enterprises and has engaged dozens of external industry mentors from whom students can choose. With their rich practical management experience and personal charisma, these external mentors enhance students’ personal development and professional competence, help broaden their horizons, sharpen their thinking, and develop career awareness.
Both on-campus and external mentors guide students not only in theoretical learning, but also in applying theory to practice and solving practical problems with theoretical knowledge.
4. Excellent Alumni Network
USTB has a rich alumni network, which effectively supports the development of MEM internship bases and students’ career advancement. The SEM Alumni Center regularly organizes alumni industry salons, alumni lectures, and other activities, promoting exchanges and cooperation among alumni from various industries at home and abroad in more fields and at deeper levels. These activities provide an important communication platform for MEM students’ professional studies and future career development.
